YOUR SENIOR LIVING QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

No matter where you choose to live, this information can help you make an informed decision.

Assisted Living
Assisted Living

What Is Blaine Assisted Living?

Assisted living is usually intended for seniors who are able to do some things on their own, but who still need help with day-to-day activities. This type of housing is usually geared towards people with moderate disabilities but may also be able to handle people with severe disabilities.

An assisted living facility is a residential care facility for older individuals, usually 55 and older. (A nursing home is another type of residential care facility for older individuals.) An assisted living facility provides a safe place to live, as well as assistance with daily activities. In an assisted living facility, the staff will do everything from helping with meal preparation to providing help bathing and dressing.

Although an assisted living facility can be a good choice for some seniors, it may not be appropriate for everyone. First, it's important to understand that an assisted living facility is a residential facility, not a nursing home. Assisted living facilities do not provide medical care. If a resident in a facility needs medical care, they must be referred to a hospital or a nursing home.

Assisted living facilities are only licensed for people age 55 and older. However, in some circumstances, people younger than age 55 can also be placed in an assisted living facility. The Social Security Administration (SSA) can be helpful in determining whether someone under age 55 should be placed in an assisted living facility.

Two types of services (or assistance) are provided in an assisted living facility:

    • Personal care services: help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and meal preparation.
    • Congregate or community meals: meals are served in a group setting, usually in a dining room.

Is A Assisted Living Blaine WA Community Right For You?

If you're considering a move into assisted living, here are a few things to consider.

Costs - Many people assume that assisted living costs a lot of money, but that's not necessarily true. Depending on the facility and services provided, assisted living can be as affordable as a good nursing home.

Activities - When you move into assisted living, you'll want to make sure there are plenty of things to do to keep you intellectually and physically engaged. You might even be able to take classes or attend social events.

Socializing - Many assisted living facilities have a large community of residents whom you can get to know. Some facilities even offer activities specifically designed to help residents get to know one another better.

Visitors - If you're moving into assisted living because you're disabled, you might want to make sure the facility allows visitors. Some facilities have restrictions on who can visit and when.

Security - If you're concerned about personal safety, you should make sure the facility has strong security measures in place.

Health services - If you're moving into assisted living because of a disability, you'll want to make sure you're covered by your insurance provider and that the facility has the services you need, such as on-site doctors and nurses.

Lifestyle - Assisted living facilities are different from nursing homes, so make sure you know what to expect. For example, assisted living is more independent than nursing homes, so you'll be responsible for doing more things for yourself.

Community - You want to make sure the community you're moving into is a good fit for you. For example, you might want to make sure there are people your age in the community.

Independent Living
Independent Living

Independent Living Blaine WA

Independent Living Communities are fabulous services for seniors who want to maintain their independence, but don't want to be alone or live in a nursing home. For many seniors, living independently means having the freedom to do things on their own schedule and making decisions about how they spend their time each day.

When seniors are confident about their level of physical and mental well-being, find themselves in a safe environment, have easy access to help when they need it, are surrounded by friends, enjoy an active social life filled with interests that are important to them, can manage financial matters confidently and have opportunities for education or employment – then living independently is the ideal situation.

Some independent living communities offer a variety of amenities and services, such as:

  • Housekeeping Services
  • Transportation Services
  • Dining Options (a la carte or meal plans)
  • Laundry Facilities
  • Health Care (Onsite or Offsite)
  • Recreational Activities (social, cultural and educational activities)

There are many types of independent living communities to suit every senior's needs. Some offer a choice between traditional multi-bedroom apartments or single studio or suite-style residences. In many, you can choose a meal plan and some include a private bedroom while others consist of a large central space where residents eat, socialize and watch television.

Independent living is not for everyone. Some seniors cannot live independently because of their physical or mental health conditions. However, there are many independent living communities that take great care to find the right fit between residents and facilities. You can also have a number of medical or support services on-site if needed.

What Is A Senior Living Blaine WA Community?

Senior housing communities are communities designed to provide residents with a lifestyle that is both comfortable and fulfilling. These communities are equipped with social, recreational, and educational activities to help residents stay active, engaged, and happy.

Unlike nursing homes, senior living communities are for people who are not in need of around-the-clock care, but do require some assistance with daily tasks. Many senior living communities are geared towards independent seniors who are looking for a more active lifestyle. Some senior living communities, however, are designed for seniors who want to live in a community setting but still require assistance with daily tasks.

How A Senior Living Community Can Assist You

As life expectancy among Americans continues to rise, the senior living industry has become an increasingly attractive investment. Here are some reasons why senior living communities may be right for you:

Affordable housing - A large portion of your retirement income will likely be allocated to monthly housing costs. You can reduce this cost by choosing a community with affordable monthly fees.

Unparalleled amenities - From top-of-the-line health care to wellness classes, many senior living communities offer a wide range of services for its residents.

A sense of community - Life in an assisted living or memory care facility is much more personal than life in a nursing home. You'll get to know your neighbors and build relationships with your caregivers.

Peace of mind - When you choose an assisted living facility, your family can have peace of mind knowing that you are being cared for in a familiar environment.

Enhanced safety - A community staffed with trained medical personnel is better equipped to handle emergencies than the average home.

Protection from dangers - Senior living facilities provide their residents with immediate access to emergency services and trained medical personnel.

A higher quality of life - Residents of senior living communities enjoy a higher quality of life than those who live alone, as they can benefit from the guidance and companionship of staff and other residents.

There are several different types of senior living communities. The type you choose will depend on your needs and preferences, as well as the needs of other members of your family.

Is An Independent Living Blaine WA Community Right For You?

When choosing where to live, it may be tempting to focus on the facility itself rather than what is available for residents. But your needs might change over time. So take the time to consider all of your options and not just those that are convenient now.

You may be concerned that moving into a facility offering independent living would mean giving up your independence. But people who live in these facilities are still very much in charge of their day-to-day lives. They make choices about what they do, when they do it and who they do it with. They work, volunteer, go to school or take care of their health.

There are many exciting ways for you to enjoy life! You can make choices about what is important to you, whether that means spending time with your family, friends or neighbors; playing a game by yourself or with others; or whatever excites you! You can get involved in a wide range of activities in your community. For example, you could take part in art classes, play board games, exercise, practice meditation, enjoy nature walks and go on trips to visit family and friends. In addition, many independent living communities offer a variety of social, recreational and educational activities. Some of the popular activities include dances, concerts, parties and classes on a wide range of topics.

There are also many opportunities to get involved in community organizations outside the facility. You might choose to join an organization for your age group or interests, such as a book club or local volunteer program like Big Brothers/Big Sisters. You can also become part of the larger community around you by volunteering in your neighborhood or at a local synagogue, church or school. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and share your talents and skills with others.

Even if you don't live in a place that has all of these options, it is still possible for you to take advantage of them. Look at what is available within walking distance or see if there are classes offered through your local community center or college.

As with any major decision, you should consider your options carefully. Talk to facility staff about how these options work in their communities. Think about the type of lifestyle that would suit you best and what is important to you.

What Influences Your Physical Wellbeing & How Aging Impacts Us

Our bodies change as we age, and if we don't have a good diet, it's going to be very difficult to stay healthy. Good nutrition is one of the most important things to put on your checklist as you age.

As our metabolism slows down as we age, we need to make sure we're eating enough food to provide the energy that our body needs. I also want people to know that it's not just about eating healthy foods. You need to eat enough food. It's not just about eating more of the right foods. It's also about eating less of the bad foods.

Eating less sugar, salt, fat, and processed foods are key. But more importantly, you need to plan your meals. You need to make sure you have the foods available that you need to stay healthy and provide the nutrients your body needs. And your food should be eaten in the right order. If we eat foods that we're not supposed to eat before we eat the foods we need, our body is not going to be able to absorb the nutrients from the foods we need.

Food To Nourish Our Independent Living Blaine Residents

Executive Chef Frank Blanchard and his team prepare menus and meals from scratch in our dining area (with plenty of input from residents, of course). To add flavor and flair, they use seasonal herbs that are locally cultivated and harvested from our own garden. They also cater meals to residents' tastes and dietary requirements.

The Willows’ dishes are not determined by a corporate body, unlike many national assisted living facility franchises. It is determined by the preferences and requirements of our residents. Every day, the dining staff ensures that there is nutritious fare (such as a full salad bar) as well as special dishes for special occasions, such as your birthday.

We want our meals to be nutritious, but they're also a big component of the day's social activities. We also have room service for those days when you're feeling a little under the weather.

Many senior living or retirement homes provide meals, although they are not included in the standard services. Our meal program is essential to your health and longevity at The Willow Bellingham. Your monthly rent includes dinner in our garden-side dining area every day. You are free to utilize your meals whatever you want, whenever you want, and in any combination you choose. If you skip a meal, you can “make up” for it at any point during the month.

Physical & Mental Activity As We Age

Many seniors find that residing in an assisted living or senior housing community improves their ability to keep active by allowing them to participate in the retirement home's senior-focused and structured wellness, exercise, and dietary programs. In addition, there are a number of fun and engaging activities that one can participate in to keep the mind active.

We'd like to share with you some examples of games that improve memory function or your cognitive abilities, as well as some life-enhancing activities that will help seniors maintain a happy and active life even as they age.

Memory Function

Memory function, or the ability to recall past occurrences, is a vital component of a healthy brain. It can become increasingly difficult to recall events as we age, which contributes to feelings of isolation and depression in some seniors. Keep your memory function sharp by engaging in entertaining games that focus on memorization. These include card games like solitaire, matching games like FreeCell, and trivia games like Trivial Pursuit. Moreover, there are many fun, interactive software programs available to help seniors improve their memory function by engaging in exercises that focus on recalling lists of items or past events.

Life-Enhancing Activities

Seniors who live in senior housing enjoy the benefits of daily activities designed specifically for them. These activities are meant to enhance the senior's social life, provide an opportunity for physical exercise, and stimulate their minds by focusing on fun themes. Seniors are encouraged to participate in classes that focus on improving memory function, learning new crafts or skills, or playing challenging games like chess, mahjong, or bridge. Other enrichment activities may involve attending lectures and presentations on a variety of interesting topics. If your loved one wants to learn a new skill, find a class offering instruction in the subject they desire.

Additionally, many retirement communities have clubs or organizations that focus on specific hobbies or interests. Seniors who live at an assisted living facility often spend their time engaging in exercise classes offered by the community; however, there may be clubs for seniors who enjoy such interests as knitting, crocheting, quilting, or painting. Other seniors enjoy singing and find a choir or karaoke club to join. If your loved one enjoys reading, ask if the retirement home you're interested in offers book clubs.

Exercise And The Aging Mind As A Blaine Senior Living In WA

Seniors who desire to stay young can do so by maintaining a healthy balance of neural pathways in their brains. Because these senses fade over time, it's just as crucial to give your brain a cerebral workout as it is to get in some daily physical activity. Providing your mind with new thoughts and challenges on a regular basis is one of the most effective strategies to stay attentive and improve brain function.

Your brain is constantly changing. It is not set in stone the way your bones are. You can still create new neural pathways, even as an adult, and have a healthy mind for many years to come. But while some parts of your brain weaken with age, others remain sharp well into older ages. Many seniors will need to take care of their decaying motor skills and memory problems. However, brain exercises for seniors can help them stay sharp in other parts of the brain such as attention span and problem-solving abilities.

If you want to give yourself a good shot at avoiding Alzheimer's or dementia, learning how to improve your attention and solve problems will make your mind more resilient to cognitive decline.

How Blaine Assisted Living Can Help You Stay Active

Staying in shape is something that many people struggle within their golden years. They think it is because they are getting older but really it is because they aren't doing the right things to stay fit and active. Living alone, either in an apartment or at home by yourself can be overwhelming. You may not have anyone to talk to and no one to help you with your daily living tasks, which can leave you feeling lonely and isolated. You may forget to take care of yourself or not have enough money for a fitness center membership.

Almost every assisted living home has some kind of recreation program. They make sure everyone stays active by playing games and joining in on social activities. They may have a gym full of equipment to use, or they may take you outside for a walk around the block or to a local park. Many assisted living facilities offer exercise classes that teach you about aerobics and strength training.
